Shane Warne's daughter's candid admission

Shane Warne's daughter, Brooke, has opened up about how her family has coped with the devastating loss, one year after the cricket legend's passing.

The 24-year-old candidly told Stellar Magazine that, despite missing him deeply, her family, including her siblings Jackson and Summer, as well as her mother Simone Callinan, have remained close-knit in the wake of the tragedy.

"As a family, we've always stuck together. We've always had each other's backs. We're going okay," she told the publication.

"Obviously, I miss him and think about him every second – that's never going to change," she continued.

"I think we just learn to accept life, that this is our life now, and do the best by him and make him proud... and be positive and enjoy everything. You don't know what's going to happen.

"We just had to deal with what comes our way. We do it together, and that's the important thing," she concluded.

This comes just days after loved ones took to social media to honour the legendary cricketer on what would've been his 54th birthday.

Brooke took to Instagram stories to share a throwback photo of herself and her dad.

"Your day King, Happy birthday dad," she captioned the photo posted on Wednesday the 13th with a love heart.

Another photo showed her indulging in a few of her dad's favourite snacks including potato scallops, a donut, lollies and a bag of Musk sticks.

"Birthday lunch for dad. All his faves," she captioned.

Shane's son, Jackson also took to Instagram to honour his late dad, with a video about how he planned to mark the day.

“Today would have been dad’s 54th birthday – happy birthday dad,” he said in the clip.

“And I thought instead of being sad or posting a story in black and white with a big caption with things that are quite obvious, I’m going to do what dad would have wanted me to do which is be happy and do things that make me happy."

He then listed three things that he used to do with his dad including getting Maccas, watching Two and a Half Men, and playing roulette.

“Roulette is on par for me and dad with poker and we just loved cheering on a 23 for a spin. So we’ll go downstairs and see if we can hit a 23. Happy birthday dad," he concluded his video.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jackson Warne (@jacksonwarne18)

Shane's younger daughter Summer honoured her late dad with another throwback picture posted on Instagram stories with the caption: "Happy Birthday Dad. Today Show host's honest dating life admission

Brooke Boney has made an honest admission about her dating life live on-air.

The Today Show entertainment reporter was giving her showbiz report on Thursday morning, which featured a clip of an interview with Jennifer Aniston speaking about her own dating struggles on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The Friends actress was discussing her long-running friendship with fellow movie star Adam Sandler, claiming he often weighs into her love life with the question, “What are you doing!?”, in reference to unsuitable partners.

Brooke added her own commentary to Aniston's admission, saying, “To be fair, my friends also sometimes say that to me,” she said, before turning to Today host Karl Stefanovic, who echoed Aniston’s comment, “What are you doing!?”

“I know, you’ve said that [to me] a couple of times Karlos,” she added, laughing.

Boney's admission was surprising for many viewers, as she is notoriously protective of her private life.

In March 2020, she revealed she has a boyfriend who was living in the UK, though never revealed his identity to her followers on social media.

Later the same year, it was evident the pair had gone their separate ways after Boney confirmed she was single again in an ambush segment featuring her mother, Leonie, who appeared on Today talking about how she wanted her daughter to date a “decent bloke”.

Following her break-up, which she revealed was several years long, Brooke penned an emotional column for the Sydney Morning Herald in which she detailed the decision to freeze her eggs.

“There’s still the stigma of being single in your 30s, with people assuming you can’t find love. Instead, maybe the decision to freeze eggs should be seen through the prism of its more likely causes: prioritising career; making decisions based on values; waiting for the right person; or simply leaving options open,” Boney wrote.

Two Today Show hosts test positive for Covid-19

Two hosts of The Today Show have tested positive for Covid-19.

Ally Langdon and Brooke Boney both returned a positive result for the virus, as well as "half the behind the scenes people" at Today.

Karl Stefanovic confirmed the news on air with stand in co-host Sarah Abo, saying both women were in isolation.

"Sarah is in for Ally after testing positive for COVID-19," Karl said this morning.

"Brooke has also come down with COVID-19. Both are in isolation and we will see them some time next week."

Karl went on to joke that he had managed to avoid the virus due to his overall health and fitness.

"Interestingly, those of us who are elite athletes... are fine," he said with a smile.

Karl and the rest of his immediate family suffered the effects of Covid over the Christmas break and into January, with his daughters Ava and Harper coming down with it first, and he and Jasmine shortly after.

"We were most worried about little Harper," Karl said at the time.

"She is only 18 months old and also my daughter Ava - they had it in a quite severe way initially but then they got over it really quickly, and then Jaz and I both got it and I was much worse."

Karl said while he was physically unwell for three or four days, it is the psychological impact that hits you the hardest.

"It started out and it feels like a bad cold, and it starts in the throat, then it goes to the lungs," he said.

"I'm clear now, but the residual effects of it are there.

"It keeps on going on and on - dealing with it psychologically is the hardest thing I reckon."

"That one word might make a difference"

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced she believes the national anthem should be changed to better reflect Australia’s Indigenous history.

Ms Berejiklian has called for a change to the lyrics of the anthem so it declares “we are one and free” instead of “we are young and free”.

Her comments follow after Indigenous advocate and TV personality Brooke Boney says she’s “sick of the discussions” and that it is time to change the lyrics of the Australian national anthem to better acknowledge First Nations people.

Boney, a Gamilaroi woman, informed Nine’s Today show on Wednesday morning that the current lyrics didn’t honour Indigenous Australians enough.

“I get sick of having these discussions and people throw their toys out of the cot and we can’t have a mature and sensible reaction to our future as a nation,” she said.

“We’re not young and free when the government refuses to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14.

“We are not young and free when every kid in a Northern Territory juvenile facility is black.

“It doesn’t pay tribute to the fact that this is the home – all of us are a part of this incredible legacy of the oldest continuous culture of anywhere in the world. If we can’t recognise it in our anthem, then where can we recognise that?”

Ms Berejiklian on Wednesday went on to publicly throw her support behind the “very small” word change.

She declared that it mattered and would “make such a difference” to Indigenous Australians.

“I feel hurt for people who don’t feel that the national anthem includes them,” Ms Berejiklian said on Sunrise.

“We have a very proud Indigenous culture of tens of thousands of years on this continent, so to say we are young and free ignores that.

“I think it would be appropriate for us to acknowledge that we are all united and we have a very proud, long history of Indigenous First Nations here in Australia and I think that should be reflected in our anthem.”

Ms Berejiklian has called for a national discussion on the topic.

Multiple Indigenous NRL players have been refusing to sing the anthem and say it does not reflect their story as First Nations people.

“That one word might make a difference to some people,” Ms Berejiklian told Today.

“After the horrible year we’ve had, I just really appreciate as a leader how important it is to bring people together, how important it is to include our history in total and that’s why I’m supporting this one word change.”

The Premier also said the anthem had been changed in the past.

“When I was a very young child, I remember changing back then,” she said.

“When I was a kid it was ‘Australian sons let us rejoice’ and it’s been changed to ‘Australians all let us rejoice’.”

Ms Berejiklian said she wanted to speak up about the issue because she felt passionately about wanting to support Indigenous communities.

She said her own pride in her Armenian background also informed her view.

However the word change hasn’t swayed every politician, including federal Nationals Senator Matt Canavan who says he didn’t like it.

“I don’t think the writers of this anthem when they say ‘young’ are intending any kind of offence here,” he said during a heated debate with Northern Territory Labor Senator Malarndirri McCarthy on Today.

“We are a young nation. We have old civilisations and we have a rich history over tens of thousands of years but we are a young country. That is something important to recognise as well.

“So I just think it is another example of people taking offence when there was no offence intended.”

"So happy": Today reporter Brooke Boney speaks out about Pauline Hanson dumping

Today show reporter Brooke Boney has said that she was "so happy" to see Pauline Hanson fired by Nine as Hanson made comments about social housing tenants that are "disgusting".

“I am so happy to see her gone,” Boney said on ABC-TV’s Q&A program on Monday night.

“I grew up in Housing Commission. To me, I was thinking about all of those kids sitting at home watching.

“All of those people trapped in their apartments, watching and thinking, ‘This is what Australia thinks of us. This is what the rest of our country thinks – is that we’re alcoholics and drug addicts’. And that’s disgusting.

What can be done to protect the residents of Melbourne’s locked down towers from further vilification? And what can be to ensure these residents have access to daily necessities? #QandA pic.twitter.com/5u5kLbJz5I
— QandA (@QandA) July 6, 2020

“I’m all for free speech, and I think that people, when they have different perspectives and different opinions, that most of the time it does help drive argument forward or debate forward or policy forward," Boney explained.

“But when you use it to vilify people, or to be deliberately mean and mean-spirited, it’s …. that, to me, is disgusting.

“She says hurtful things about Aboriginal people as well that upset me.”

Boney is a Gamilaroi/Gomeroi woman and was one of four panellists on Q&A's episode that focused on COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, cancel culture, alcohol in lockdown and political ethics.

Shadow Federal Minister for Environment and Water Terri Butler said that Hanson had been a "public racist since 1996".

“She used her first maiden speech to say that we were in danger of being ‘swamped by Asians’ and used her second speech saying we were in danger of being ‘swamped by Muslims.

“We’re not talking about someone who just woke up this morning a racist. Shows have been platforming her. I think it’s a business model. I think it’s all about her.

“She’s got a party built on a brand. The brand is built on her personality. Her business model has worked.”

However, ex-Liberal MP Christopher Pyne disagreed.

“I think that Pauline Hanson genuinely believes the things that she says,” he said.

“She’s been quite consistent about it – consistently bad, right? – but she’s been consistent about it.

“I’ve been surprised watching Pauline Hanson over 20-odd years that her views haven’t changed very much.

“There’s definitely a cadre of people who believe and agree with what Pauline says.

“And they’ve been the one party from the non-Labor side of politics that’s actually been quite successful over the last 20 years, One Nation.”

Hanson made the offensive comments on the Today show about the Melbourne residents that are trapped inside nine housing commission towers.

Co-host Ally Langdon told Hanson that some of the tower residents haven't eaten properly since Saturday due to the latest restrictions.

“Ah come on Ally, we’ve seen food being delivered there,” Hanson replied. “The fact is a lot of them are drug addicts as well, they are getting their medication, they are alcoholics so they’re being looked after in that way.

“They are actually getting paid extra money. Why are they getting paid extra money? For what? They are not leaving the premises.”

3,000 people are in their second day of quarantine in Melbourne's public housing commission towers. #9Today pic.twitter.com/tpgdWmMTA9
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) July 5, 2020

Hanson then went on to say that an inability to speak English had led to the towers being shut down.

“A lot of these people are from non-English speaking backgrounds, probably English is their second language who haven’t adhered to the rules of social distancing. They all used a lot of the same laundry,” she said.

“So the fact is you’ve got to look at why they are in that situation. Why is it they are in that situation? Why has the Government gone to this high-rise building and shut it down? Possibly because a lot of these people weren’t doing the right thing.

“Is the Government worried about the other areas that are shut down? You know, the people in their homes, are they able to actually get out and buy the food as well? There has to be a reason why they have targeted this set of blocks, apartment blocks. Ask that question.”

After these comments, Hanson suggested that refugees from war-torn countries should be able to handle being locked up.

“You know, these people, I saw them taking a truckload of food to them, all the rest of it, if they are from war-torn countries, which some of these people are, they know what it is like to be in tough conditions,” she said.

“So I’d say, you know, have a look at the facts before you criticise and that aspect and I think the governments and all of these other, you know, these interest groups an everyone will make sure they’re well looked after."

5 minutes with author Karen Brooks

In 5 minutes with author, Over60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Karen Brooks, a writer, columnist and academic based in Hobart, Tasmania. She has written 13 books and appeared on the ABC’s The Einstein Factor, Channel 9’s 60 Minutes and Channel 7’s Sunrise and Today Tonight as a social commentator. Her latest novel, The Darkest Shore, is out now.

Over60 talked with Brooks about writing historical fiction, bad writing tips, and dealing with critics.

Over60: What is your best writing tip?

Karen Brooks: Best writing tip is just keep writing, even when you know it’s dreadful and think it won’t work. The reason being, it’s easier to have something on then page or screen to correct than nothing at all. I don’t think I have ever received a bad writing tip – they’re all given with great intentions, even when they might not work for you.

What book(s) are you reading right now?

I am reading Daughter of Victory Lights by Kerri Turner. A work of historical fiction set in London during the Blitz and after. It’s marvellous.

Have your past jobs as an academic and a columnist influenced your writing work?

I think they have in both good and bad ways. The bad way is as an academic, I love the research and find it hard to tear myself away from it. I become lost in the past and follow all these amazing trails and keep digging up wonderful nuggets of information that I just want to include in the book. That cannot always happen.

The good result is, as a columnist, I have strict word limits and pare back my writing, so I am not afraid to cut and delete – so sometimes those nuggets, as golden and glistening as they are, don’t end up in the finished work. I’m also not afraid of deleting sections, chapters or just sentences, as well as being edited – as an academic and columnist it happens all the time, and I know my novel editor is working hard to help me shape the book into its best possible condition.

What do you think makes for a good historical fiction work?

Respecting the past and any details included as much as you can, while never forgetting that your role as a writer is to entertain, move, delight and even shock the reader. History needs to serve the story, not dominate it.

What does your writing routine look like?

I rise early, go for a run, then shower, dress and work six to eight hours, five days a week. Longer days and more when I am nearing the end of a book or trying to meet a tight deadline. I take my writing seriously and treat it as a business – so I dress for work, retreat to my study space and, as much as I can, stay focused and try not to get distracted. It doesn’t always work!

How do you deal with critics, both external (from other people) and internal (from yourself)?

Great question! I always take criticism to heart – but in a good way... mainly. Sometimes, what someone notes about your book can be personal to them, but that’s no reason not to reflect upon it and see if what they’re saying can improve future work.

But there is a difference between critiquing a work and just criticising it for the sake of it. I don’t understand people who do that – you know, go searching for all the things “wrong” with a work when there is so much “right” about it too. But you can’t please everyone. It’s hard not to be devastated if someone really doesn’t like what you’ve done – after all, writers never set out with the intention to have people react in a bad way to their novels, but it can happen. Again, I think about why they have responded in that way and move forward.

The internal critic is much harder to deal with than external ones though! No one can critique their work and believe it’s never as good as you wish or as others might think than the writer her or himself!

What trope grinds your gears?

I don’t think there’s any trope that grinds my gears... yet. Like cliches, I love seeing how writers incorporate and use them. I am constantly impressed with original spins on old cliches, like romantic encounters and interests, or in crime fiction with detectives working a case.

Oh, wait, there is a trope that grinds my gears after all! The stupid police boss who doesn’t respect or listen to his or her subordinates... Even when what they’re saying is smart and obvious. It can be overworked sometimes.

Which author, deceased or living, would you most like to have dinner with?

Can I nominate enough for a dinner party? LOL! Geraldine Brooks (no relation, sadly), Elizabeth George, Michael Connelly, Shirley Hazzard (I did meet her once before she died, and she was wonderful), Bruce Pascoe, Elly Griffiths, Jane Austen, Bram Stoker, Margaret Atwood and Shakespeare... oh, and Geoffrey Chaucer – my next novel features him, and I have a few questions I’d love to ask him! I could have a few dinner parties, with different authors at the table each time... wouldn’t that be sensational (and intimidating)?

“How ridiculous”: Pauline Hanson and Today show panned over "shameful" Uluru debate

In three months, the hour-long hike up Uluru will be closed, but the decision has stirred up debate around the nation as the closure of the hike draws closer.

One Nation’s Pauline Hanson and 2GB radio DJ and regular The Project panellist Steve Price appeared on Today this morning to discuss why the rock should stay open to climbers.

Despite traditional owners of the land being horrified as tourists flock to Uluru to climb it before the closure, Price and Hanson shared their thoughts during the all-white panel debate.

“The Australian taxpayers put in millions, hundreds of millions of dollars into it and they’re wanting another $27.5 million to upgrade the airport there for the resort,” Hanson said.

“Now the resort has only returned $19 million to the taxpayers only just recently. It employs over 400 people there, 38 per cent are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

“The fact is, it’s money-making. It’s giving jobs to indigenous communities, and you’ve got thousands of tourists who go there every year and want to climb the rock,” Hanson finished.

Price agreed.

“What we should be doing is assisting the local indigenous population to make this a growing tourism concern. We’ve seen, apparently, a huge spike in people that want to climb it since the announcement it’s going to close in October. Today show host opens up about "severe" backlash

Today show's entertainment reporter Brooke Boney has opened up and shared what happened after her controversial Australia Day speech on SBS's program Insight on Tuesday night.

She spoke as a part of a panel of prominent Indigenous Australians on a special NAIDOC edition of Insight.

Boney shared her story as to why she got into journalism, which was due to a “really big trauma” in her family.

“It really made me question who I was, and … why so many things kept happening to my family, and why my life seemed so much harder than the people around me,” she said.

The words echoed her speech that she delivered on January 26, which was one of her first episodes onToday after the producers debuted a new line-up of co-hosts.

Boney called for the date of Australia Day to be changed due to respect for the Indigenous community.

“I can’t separate 26 January from the fact that my brothers are more likely to go to jail than school or that my little sisters and my mum are more likely to be beaten or raped than anyone else’s sisters or mum. And that started from that day,” Boney expressed.

Boney took the time on Insight to reflect on the impact of her words and the “bloody big” reaction her statement caused.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be as big or as severe as what it was. I knew there’s a big part of our country who haven’t heard different perspectives on big questions of our national identity before … that was a big part of the reason I wanted to go work at Channel 9. But I didn’t understand how new the concept would be to so many people. I’d been working at Triple J, ABC, NITV, SBS — those sorts of views aren’t uncommon,” she explained.

View this post on Instagram

Here’s a picture of me with tears in my eyes sitting next to @courtneyugle_ on @insightsbs because I was so overcome with emotion. These young people share the stories of the worst of what has happened in their lives to prove to other young Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people that they can do anything. That’s my experience with blackfullas tho. It’s so often (nearly always) the case that they’re not seeking fame or fortune for themselves. They want to succeed to prove that they are good enough, that they can do it. They want to keep going so they can make other people’s lives easier. And that’s it. You have a purpose that’s bigger than your next song or getting through medical school or winning a game of footy. Long caption but watch the show tonight. But then you get all this support from people who love and care about you — and also from strangers. It’s the most amazing thing — you realise you’ve said something that’s hit a nerve.”

Boney finished her speech with words that were meant for those in the studio’s audience, which was full with young Indigenous Australians.

“Just because you’re born into a situation, it doesn’t mean that you have to stay there. Just because people don’t think that you’re very smart or that you’re very special or that you have a right to be heard … that does not mean that you have to live in that idea of yourself. The amazing thing about this country is that if you work hard — and it is hard, I’m not going to lie, it’s really tough — you can overcome that,” she said.

“It warms my heart to know that whatever Blackfellas want to be, they can be it, in this day and age.”

Shane Warne's kids Jackson and Brooke open up about their famous dad

There’s no doubt Shane Warne is an Australian legend, and his family can attest to that also.

But for his three children, Brooke, Jackson and Summer Warne, it doesn’t matter that their father is the iconic leg spinner that was a headline magnet for his sporting prowess and phenomenal talent for a number of years before retirement – he’s just always been dad to them.

And for 20-year-old Jackson, he admitted following in his father’s footsteps and forging his own cricket career never “interested” him.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jackson Warne (@jacksonwarne18) on May 20, 2019 at 12:30am PDT

In a new interview with news.com.au, the sport star’s son opened up about struggling with pressure to be as successful as his father, confessing he wasn’t “that good” at cricket.

“I played one year when I was at school, and in one of the games it got in the newspaper and made some articles,” Jackson explained.

“The whole pressure factor … I could never be that good, I could never try to be that good.

“The pressure and expectations … I just was not really interested.”

“But when we were going through school, it didn’t matter what we wanted to do, Dad just wanted us to be happy," Jackson added.

Shane, 49, played cricket for Australia and all over the world for almost two decades before retiring from the sport.

Despite the fact Jackson and his family get recognised anywhere they go when their dad is in tow, he and his siblings only ever viewed him as “just dad".

“I think I speak for Brooke, Summer and myself, we don’t see him as anyone else other than just our dad,” Jackson said.

“We don’t see him as a legend. The end of the Today show? Breakfast show's ratings hit shocking new low

The Today show has placed third on TV ratings when it comes to the morning breakfast slot, after being beaten by an unlikely underdog.

According to Crikey, the ABC’s News Breakfast has taken second place behind Sunrise on Channel 7, swiftly eclipsing the once revered Channel Nine program.

The ABC morning show amassed over 265,000 national viewers across ABC and ABC News on Wednesday, while Today raked in 1000 less with 264,000.

Sunrise has kept the lead for a while now and sat on top with over 447,000 viewers nationally.

It’s been a non-stop saga for the Channel Nine morning show after Karl Stefanovic was ousted in December of 2018. Today hoped to regain some of its lost audience with a fresher, shinier panel and a brand-new look but it’s to no avail.

Just one year prior, Stefanovic’s co-host Lisa Wilkinson shocked Australian viewers by resigning from her position due to pay discrepancies.

A Nine spokesperson has rebuffed Crikey’s report, claiming the figures don’t hold as ABC’s morning show screens across two channels, unlike Today.

“Today won nationally against ABC Breakfast (combined five City Metro and Regional 264,000 to 193,000) as well as five City Metro,” they said.

Not only has the gap widened between both Channel 7 and Channel 9’s morning shows, but the new contender coming into play has distanced the two rivals even further.

After disappointing figures last month, Nine’s director of morning television, Steve Burling seemed to remain upbeat.

“It’s very early days and rating figures will continue to fluctuate, but I’m absolutely thrilled with the dynamic between Georgie, Deb, Tom and the entire on-air team,” he told news.com.au.

“And, I’m confident that the audience will be turning to us in the weeks and months ahead.”

When the revamp debuted in January, Today was smashed in ratings, drawing in a measly 197,000 metro viewers.

At one point, the show attracted just 167,000 metro viewers, which marked the lowest figures since 2006.

In a statement to TV Tonight, Adrian Swift, Nine’s head of content production was still positive and said viewers should give the refurbished Today show a chance.

“The reality is when you change your line-up it takes a long time to bed in,” he explained.

“We're not concerned. We are absolutely convinced we will get there.”

Brooke Boney, Tom Steinfort, and Tony Jones joined the new panel with Deborah and Georgie in January after longtime host, Karl Stefanovic was axed.

Will you be watching Today anytime soon?
